Slateport City played host to a winter market in its Upper District every year, but snow and cold had not always accompanied it. Only in the last few years did Gunner have to bundle up in a coat, scarf, and beanie while he did his holiday shopping.[break][break]

He found that he didn't mind it. While Hoenn's summers were sweltering, the weather was fairly mild during the year. The concept of four distinct seasons was a phenomenon of other regions, one that Gunner enjoyed whenever he visited them. It was nice to have such novelties in Hoenn.[break][break]

"Thank you," he said as a vendor handed him a small paper shopping bag. Inside it was a leatherbound notebook for his father. Gunner tucked the small bag into a larger one at his feet, which held a gift for his mother, then picked up his purchases and left the stall.[break][break]

One more gift to go, and he could head home. He scanned the busy lane lined with booths and the throng of people milling around, shopping, and enjoying a sunny day despite the cold. As his golden eyes searched for an item that stood out as very Gideon-esque, they fell upon a familiar face. She's the woman I met while hiking, Gunner realized as he neared her. His steps slowed, and soon he was mere feet away.[break][break]

"So you didn't return to Unova after all," he said, loudly enough for her to hear. It was not a question, but an observation.

Fae Madden sticks out like a sore thumb.

In the colourful joy of the Christmas market, she’s humourless, alone, and clad in black. The sound of high heels meeting cobblestone accompanies her every step, yet she’s not particularly tall even with them. There’s a long coat that has been left open, revealing a cropped sweater and fair skin that many would not dare to bare in this winter weather. She does not seem to mind, though. If anything, it’s as if she thrives in this weather – smile or not.

Ironically, Gunner Graves would know that much to be true, even if the passing conversation with a handsome stranger she met during a hike feels like a distant memory to the actress. He speaks Unova and she pauses, both due to the mention of her home and the slight familiarity of the voice. So, she turns away from the stall she had been looking at, and it’s then that she meets eyes as gold as hers.

”What can I say? The weirdness drew me in, and I’m starting to think I may be a magnet for it too.” She takes a step closer, holding the two bags that are to be precious gifts for her sister. ”A hot hiker at a Christmas market? Sounds pretty damn weird to me.”

At that, there’s a slight smirk.

Dozens of people can overhear her, Fae knows it, and she doesn’t care in the least.

Yet, unbeknownst to her, the sneaky pokémon hiding behind a nearby stall can overhear them as well, and their greedy gazes are fixed on the shopping bags they have with them.

Gunner shrugged, unfazed by the woman's brazen declaration. If she was expecting witty repartee from him, she would be disappointed; he merely said, "It's less weird than you think, considering I live here."[break][break]

He meant not only Slateport City, but Hoenn itself.[break][break]

The man shifted his shopping bag to free up his right hand, which he then extended to the woman for a shake. "I'm Gunner."[break][break]

Suddenly, two blurry shapes zoomed out from under a nearby table. One of them collided with the bag in Gunner's left hand, tearing it out of his relaxed grip. The other one snatched the woman's bags, too. Then they fled, causing the crowd to scatter in their wake.[break][break]

Gunner whirled around, golden eyes locking onto the fleeing thieves. Two mischievous Nickits! Instinctively, he yanked a Pokéball off his belt and threw it into the air. His Staraptor, Igraine, materialized mid-flight.[break][break]

"Igraine! Two Nickits have our bags! After them!" The command in his voice came out naturally, like he was a gym challenger — no, like he was in the military, an officer giving orders to his squad.[break][break]

While his Staraptor pursued by wing, Gunner gave chase on foot.

Between the unfazed stare and the matter-of-fact response, it all results to be kind of hilarious to Fae, and it makes that meaner and more playful side of her really want to keep messing with him. She decides to be good instead. For now, at least.

So, when he offers a handshake, she shifts her bags too, taking his hand with one that is soft and delicate. Her gaze meets his if only for a moment. ”Nice to finally have a name to go with the handsome face, Gunner.”

Well, of course she isn’t going to be entirely good, okay? That would just be out of character.
[break][break]
So, objectively, perhaps the Nickit’s interruption is a good thing, but Fae sure as hell disagrees. Not because of Gunner.
[break][break]
”What the fuck?!” A loud exclamation draws people’s attention to the pair of fleeing pokémon, and while Gunner sure is quick to act for someone who is supposed to be just some average – although good looking – guy, Fae is initially stunned. Once she’s over her shock, the anger comes. ”Little brats… Hey, give that back!”

Ever seen a woman running in stiletto boots?
[break][break]
It sure takes some practice, but to an actress who has done things like those on set a million times before, the action comes naturally and without a second thought. She’s surprisingly fast too, keeping up with both Gunner and the Nickit. Only once already giving chase does she call out a pokémon to join the Staraptor.

”Cicero, get that Nickit!”
[break][break]
The Mightyena may be her companion, but he’s also her guard and thus trained for the task. He does as she commands, chasing the pair of small vulpine pokémon.

Staraptor ♀ (Igraine) | Intimidate | Aerial Ace, Agility, Close Combat, Endeavor, Take Down, Wing Attack

Though Gunner became aware that the woman was keeping up with him, he paid her no mind, keeping his full attention on the fleeing Nickits. Above them, Igraine swooped low and tackled one of them, engaging in CLOSE COMBAT. The two Pokémon tumbled across the pavement, sending Fae's shopping bags scattering. Thankfully, none of their contents spilled out to get scuffed up.[break][break]

The second Nickit paused momentarily, unsure if it should keep running or help its friend. Then it noticed the Mightyena coming in hot, and it raced away.[break][break]

Free of the bags, the first Nickit struck back against the Staravia with a QUICK ATTACK. Igraine shrieked in annoyance, her piercing call filling the market. Other shoppers gave them two Pokémon a wide berth.[break][break]

"Igraine!" Gunner called out. "Leave it! Get the other one!"[break][break]

The Staravia obediently tore away from the battle, leaving the first Nickit for the Mightyena to finish off. With a boost of AGILITY, the bird sped off in pursuit of the second thief.

”If I snap a heel, I’m skinning those little bitches alive.” is the sort of wonderful and not at all murderous thought that crosses Fae’s mind as she runs. These are of course her main concerns: the gifts she had bought for her dear sister and boots that may just be her favourite. The fact that she may look a mess while running? Not an issue. The fact that Gunner is there? Barely noticeable at the moment.

One of the Nickit is stopped by the Staraptor. Good. It drops her bags, though. Not so good, but at least nothing seems to have fallen. The second Nickit turns to look at them, and at that moment, both Fae and her Pokémon know what comes next.
[break][break]
”CICERO.” The stare the Mightyena gives the Nickit is nothing short of terrifying: baring fangs and snarling. This oh so SCARY FACE does an excellent job at making the small vulpine pokémon hesitate, moving much slower. Hopefully, it’ll be enough for the AGILE Staraptor to catch it.

Cicero moves in to take hold of the other culprit, FANGS piercing like THUNDER.
[break][break]
And Fae? Fae finally stops running, not even taking a second to catch her breath before picking up the most important bag. She checks its content: a beautiful silk scarf, making sure it hadn’t been torn or damaged in any way. Relieved, she takes a deep breath.

The Mightyena's SCARY FACE successfully slowed down the second Nickit so that Igraine could catch up with it. A WING ATTACK from the Staraptor buffeted the Fox Pokémon so that its grip on Gunner's shopping bag loosened, allowing the bird to snatch the bag by its handles. With a powerful flap of her wings, she flew back to her master, her prize clutched in her claws.[break][break]

"Thank you, Igraine," Gunner said as he took the bag from her. Peeking inside, he breathed a sigh of relief to see that all of his gifts were all there, and undamaged too. "What a bother."[break][break]

Tucking the bag securely under his arm, he turned to Fae. "How about your things? Is everything all right?" he asked her.

In the middle of all the surprise, annoyance, and rush to recover her stolen gifts, she had almost forgotten about Gunner Graves. It's only when he addresses her that she turns to look at him, her cheeks lightly flushed due to the run and her hair no longer looking as perfect as it usually does.

"Yeah... Thanks for the help." There's actual gratitude in her voice, the intensity of her golden gaze being somewhat diminished by a slight yet genuine smile. "How about yours? Everything okay?"

She watches him for a moment. Under different circumstances, Fae would have perhaps suggested seeing the rest of the winter market together, but after what just happened, this is honestly the last place she wants to be. As a result, a question is raised seemingly out of the blue and with a smirk:

"Do you have plans? I think I'd rather be somewhere where I won't get attacked by Pokémon every step I take."

"Yeah, everything's intact," Gunner confirmed. He held onto the bag firmly as he used his free hand to recall his Staraptor into her Pokéball.[break][break]

Just as he was about to bid the blonde woman farewell, she asked if he had any plans. He paused, confused by the sudden interest — momentarily forgetting, in the panic and chaos of having to chase down their purchases, that she had commented before about his attractiveness.[break][break]

"I have to buy one more thing from the winter market, but otherwise, I don't have any other plans today." Gunner tilted his head at her, curious now to know what she was thinking. "Besides, I don't believe you've introduced yourself yet."
